Every city election – like the one coming up on November 8th – reminds me of how important participation in local government is.
When we lose sight of that, we lose. That’s what happened in the city election of 2005. A minority of people within our community became the majority at the polls and the City of Moscow has not been the same since. To jog your memory, that’s when Aaron Ament’s short stint on City Council began and Nancy Chaney became Mayor.
The GMA was formed by a group of concerned citizens, city leaders and businesses to champion free market enterprise, private property rights and limited government after the 2005 city election brought an anti‐business bias to City Hall.
As you may remember, the GMA made an extraordinary impact in the following election two years later. All three of the GMA‐endorsed candidates (including Dan Carscallen and Wayne Krauss) won City Council seats and our “get‐out‐the‐vote” effort brought out 1,000 more voters than the number that voted in 2005.
In the city election of 2009 we made more headway, and much of the mess of the 2005 election is getting cleaned up. But to keep Moscow heading in the right direction, we need to encourage our friends and family members to vote November 8th and re-elect Dan Carscallen and Wayne Krauss.
We also need your financial support to help with our “get-out-the-vote” campaign this year. You’ll recall we did away with annual dues in favor of asking for contributions when needed… and they’re needed now.
Now’s also a good time to note the difference between the GMA and the Greater Moscow Political Action Committee (GMPAC). The PAC gives money directly to candidates and/or advertises in support of endorsed candidates. The GMA endorses and promotes candidates to its membership, but our efforts within the community are to promote voter participation.
Contributions to the GMA can be sent to P.O. Box 9051 in Moscow.
Yours for a greater Moscow!
